The modern world we live in is a much more toxic environment then the one our ancestors lived in and a permanent assault on our health. The overwhelming majority of people are chronically fatigued and relying on stimuli of some sort to push on through their exhaustion.
We need a lot more rest to 
cultivate and conserve energy for deep healing.
Although rest is of such importance in regards to healing gentle exercise is very beneficial. Apart from walking which is probably the best, helpful exercise can include gentle weight lifting, cycling if done safely, swimming in safe, non-polluted, non-chlorinated water, and perhaps some light sports such as gentle tennis. The key word to take from this is
gentle. Vigorous exercise will be counter beneficial for most people, at least until their health and vitality have increased substantially.
Strenuous exercise often makes one feel good directly afterwards but this has more to do with stimulation of the adrenal glands, the thyroid gland and perhaps other glands, and gives many people a temporary high that they believe is healthful when in fact it is not. Most often they will feel lethargic and tired if they don’t keep up this stimulation through heavy exercise on a daily basis.
On 
a proper program, the body chemistry can often easily be balanced. This way one can enjoy exercise without it becoming addictive and feel well whether one exercises or not.  This should be the goal of a healthful exercise program.
Although vigorous
exercise is not normally recommended on a development program it is still very beneficial for career/high level athletes and lowers their injury rate while enhancing their performance and recovery.

Detoxification

A development program detoxifies the body deeply, undoing years (often decades in the case of adults) of accumulation of toxic metals and toxic chemicals, which are responsible for serious health problems.
